South Africa’s quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has suffered a major blow after the world football body stripped the team of points for fielding an ineligible player.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee announced on Monday that Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho in March has been overturned and awarded as a 3-0 forfeit to their opponents.
At the centre of the sanction is midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who played in the fixture despite being suspended for two accumulated yellow cards. The oversight has now cost the South African Football Association (SAFA) not just points but also financial penalties and reputational damage on the global stage.
In addition to the match forfeiture, FIFA imposed a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs (about $12,500) on SAFA and issued Mokoena with a formal warning.
The ruling underlines FIFA’s strict stance on disciplinary compliance and its zero tolerance for administrative lapses in international competitions.
The consequences of the decision are significant for Group C of the African qualifiers. South Africa, who had topped the group, now drop to second place, level on points with Benin but behind on goal difference. Only group winners are guaranteed automatic qualification for the World Cup, while runners-up face a tougher path through the playoffs.
The development has breathed new life into the campaigns of Nigeria and Rwanda, who are now just three points behind the leaders with two matches left to play.
Benin, buoyed by their improved standing, will travel to Rwanda and Nigeria in a decisive double-header between October 10 and 14, matches that could reshape the group’s final outcome.
For South Africa, the road ahead is steep. They must regroup quickly as they prepare for a critical away fixture against Zimbabwe before hosting Rwanda in their final qualifier. With their margin for error now gone, Bafana Bafana face the daunting challenge of reviving their World Cup dream under intense pressure.
