TechEfiko, a non-profit organization based in Kogi State, has emphasized the role of creativity and innovation in positioning Nigeria as a country of innovators and creators shaping the global technology landscape.
This was the highlight of the organization’s recent Tech & Sport Independence Day event in Lokoja as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebration.
Held at the Chari Maigumeri Barracks Sports Complex in Lokoja, the event brought together young people, military personnel, students, and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the theme: Empowering Youth and Celebrating Freedom through Innovation & Sportsmanship.”
The event which featured competitions in football, basketball, and volleyball with participating teams from the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade, Federal University Lokoja (FUL), and members of the NYSC was a display strong team spirit, collaboration and youth engagement.
In her address on behalf of TechEfiko’s founder and CEO, Yomi Odunsi, lead trainer and programme coordinator Azeezat Ballo emphasized the organisation’s commitment to shaping a future where Nigerian youth are at the forefront of technological advancement and social change.
“Our goal is to shift the narrative,” Ballo said. “Nigerians must not only consume technology, we must build, innovate, and lead. Through this platform, we are creating an environment where young people can explore their potential, develop creative solutions, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world.”
In the basketball competition, the 12 Brigade Ballers, captained by Richard Okoye, emerged champions after a thrilling match against FUL.
Football saw Dynamic FC, representing 12 Brigade face off with NYSC with the NYSC team clinching victory with a 3 – 0 score line while the volleyball tournament saw the 12 Brigade Pikers triumphed over FUL to emerge winners in that category
Participants and team captains praised the initiative for fostering teamwork, discipline, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose among young people.
Organizers say the Independence Day Edition of the Tech and Sports event builds on the momentum of the Confluence Tech programme held earlier in August, with the support of the Kogi State Government, emphasizing that the effort aimed at cultivating digital skills and creative thinking among the youth.
