‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a nationwide immunisation campaign targeting 16 million children against measles, rubella, and other preventable diseases. The initiative, led by the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), is supported by international partners including UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). The official flag-off took place at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.

‎Government officials described the campaign as a major step toward eliminating measles and rubella in Nigeria by 2030. The vaccination drive will provide measles-rubella (MR) vaccines while integrating other health interventions such as polio vaccines, HPV immunisation for girls aged 9 to 14, and preventive measures against neglected tropical diseases.

‎The exercise, which began on October 6, will run in two phases — the first covering northern states and Oyo State throughout October, and the second scheduled for January to February 2026 across the southern states. According to the NPHCDA, the target group includes children aged nine months to 14 years, with special focus on “zero-dose” children who have never received any vaccines.

‎To ensure broad coverage, vaccinations will be administered in schools, marketplaces, health centres, places of worship, and other public spaces. The government said the campaign aligns with efforts to strengthen routine immunisation and health systems nationwide. Measles remains a leading cause of death among children under five, while rubella can cause serious complications in pregnant women and newborns.

‎Health Minister emphasized that the integrated approach will reduce missed opportunities and improve service delivery. He assured that measures have been put in place to ensure vaccine safety, with trained medical teams ready to handle mild side effects such as fever or rashes.

‎Traditional and religious leaders, including representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto, the Ooni of Ife, and the Christian Association of Nigeria, attended the flag-off ceremony to show their support. International partners pledged continued assistance in logistics, vaccine supply, and public sensitisation, while the government urged parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive the free and safe vaccines.
