FIRS Announces Tax Reforms Reshaped Nigeria Ecosystem

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that its tax reforms have successfully reshaped Nigeria’s tax administration ecosystem, improving efficiency, transparency, and compliance while expanding the nation’s revenue base.

According to the agency, the recent structural and digital reforms have not only streamlined tax collection processes but also positioned FIRS as one of the most technologically advanced revenue agencies in Africa.

At the training workshop for Justices of the Supreme Court, Court Of Appeal, and Judges of the Federal High Court on the new tax laws, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji said the reform leading to amendments to the tax laws including the Finance Acts, the Petroleum Industry Act, and various subsidiary legislations, have significantly reshaped Nigeria’s tax ecosystem.

Adedeji underscored the importance of judicial interpretation in balancing the legitimate powers of tax authorities with the rights of taxpayers. “The judiciary, through its interpretative powers, remains the ultimate arbiter in maintaining the delicate balance between both sides,” he said.

He emphasized that maintaining judicial consistency and ensuring the timely resolution of tax disputes are vital for enhancing voluntary compliance and investor confidence—two essential pillars of Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability. “Tax disputes that are resolved promptly and based on clear judicial principles foster compliance and contribute to economic stability,” he noted.

Adedeji commended the steps being taken by the judiciary to achieve government’s tax objectives. He stated that the FIRS is dedicated to supporting the judiciary by promoting knowledge sharing, providing technical resources, and maintaining ongoing collaboration.

“As key stakeholders in Nigeria’s tax system, we must continue to strengthen collaboration, foster dialogue, and develop mechanisms that promote early and effective resolution of tax disputes,” He said.

Adedeji expressed confidence that the workshop would improve the quality of judicial rulings on tax issues, thereby contributing to a more transparent, fair, and efficient tax system that supports Nigeria’s sustainable growth.
