Kogi State is home to over 700 Primary Healthcare Centres but they largely existed under a crushing burden of inefficiency until a gradual but deliberate revitalization began under the administration of former Governor Yahaya Bello.

It was common to hear public discussions or read reports about how pregant women and new born babies failed to make it alive in some of the PHCs thus throwing families and communities into mourning in distant times past.

However, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has changed the narrative by not only building on what he met on the ground but proactively taking on an ambitious revitalization of most of the PHCs and even remodeling some to functional level 2 health facilities with all the resources comparable to some general hospitals in some parts of the country.

As of April 2024, shortly after Governor Ododo took office,
less than half of all the PHCs in the state could be said to be at the enviable level they are headed for right now.

By January, 2026, when the second anniversary of the Ododo administration will be marked, nearly 100 of the PHCs in the first phase of the revitalization process would have been completed.
