In a decisive move to clamp down on unregistered schools and enhance education standards, the Kogi State Ministry of Education has sealed several schools in Lokoja, the state capital, for operating illegally.
According to the ministry, the action was taken in line with Section 20 of the Kogi State Education Law, 2020, which prohibits the operation of schools without proper approval and authorization from the state government.
Leading a team on a routine inspection of schools in Lokoja on Thursday, the Director of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Matthew Salami, emphasized that any school operating in the state without the required approval from the Ministry of Education would be shut down. He warned that proprietors of such institutions would be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the Kogi State Education Law, 2020.
Mr. Salami highlighted the state government’s robust investment in the education sector, aimed at ensuring credibility and efficiency within the system. He stressed that the ministry would not allow such efforts to be undermined by the activities of illegal school operators across the state.
Meanwhile, the proprietors of the affected schools have been directed to report to the ministry immediately and to suspend all activities in their schools until all the necessary conditions and requirements for the establishment of schools are duly met.
The schools found to be operating illegally without proper authorization by the ministry include Goodland Academy, Zango Road; Arise and Shine, Zango; Nifemi Comprehensive Nursery and Primary School, Barracks; Jessi Model Academy, Barracks; and Alhikma Nursery and Primary School, Lokongoma.
The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high educational standards and ensuring that all schools in the state operate within the legal framework governing education in Kogi State.
