President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Super Eagles to turn the page and set their sights on the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
This statement was made by him on Monday, following Sunday’s narrow World Cup playoff exit against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President urged the team to “focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations,” after Nigeria’s hopes of a second consecutive World Cup appearance were dashed.
The Eagles’ qualification bid ended in Rabat after a tense 1-1 draw in extra time, with DR Congo triumphing 4-3 on penalties to secure a place in the Inter-Confederation playoff.
Despite the heartbreak, President Tinubu praised the players for their resilience and determination throughout the qualifiers, highlighting their spirited performance in the first leg of the playoff. “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” he said.
The President also called for a thorough review of Nigerian football operations, urging administrators, coaches, players, and stakeholders to return to the drawing board and “plug all the loopholes” that hindered the qualification campaign.
Acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans nationwide, Tinubu emphasized that the upcoming AFCON, scheduled for January to February 2026, presents an immediate opportunity for redemption. “Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” he stressed, rallying the team to prepare rigorously and aim for a strong continental showing.
