The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to meet with the Federal Government tomorrow, Friday, November 21, 2025, as the one-month ultimatum issued by the union expires.
A communiqué circulated to the media on Thursday confirmed that the Federal Government has invited ASUU’s top negotiators to a last-minute meeting aimed at concluding the prolonged renegotiation process. Despite the late notice, ASUU said it would attend “as a responsible union.”
The union stated that it would await the outcome of the meeting before making further decisions. According to the communiqué, once the talks are concluded, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) will convene to assess whatever offer the government presents and decide on the union’s “next line of action.”
Members were urged to remain “calm, motivated, and fully prepared” ahead of the NEC deliberations. The union emphasized that unity remains its “greatest strength” and encouraged members to be ready to comply with any directive that follows the renegotiation review.
The meeting comes after ASUU issued a one-month ultimatum to press forward with its demands. Although the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, recently claimed that the government has “literally met” many of ASUU’s demands, the union insists that critical issues remain unsettled.
Among ASUU’s key demands are the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and the development of a sustainable funding model for Nigeria’s public universities.
The outcome of Friday’s meeting will determine the next chapter for the nation’s public university system. A satisfactory government proposal may avert a fresh industrial action, while an offer deemed inadequate could push the NEC to consider another strike.
