Kogi Assembly Speaker Makes Case for Sustained Attention Education, Empowerment

The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf has enjoined the present administration in the State to sustain its efforts towards improving infrastructure in the education sector as a tool for empowering the citizens.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Yabagi Mohammed said Rt. Hon Umar made the assertion in an address he delivered at the covocation lecture during combined inaugural convocation ceremonies of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, on Friday.

The statement recorded the Speaker to have expressed gratitude to the management of the institution for considering him to chair the first such occasion in the institution, stressing that it is a proud milestone for education in Kogi State, and for citizens’ collective pursuit of knowledge.

“This university was founded on strong values: teaching, research, innovation, mentorship, and equal opportunity. Today, as we celebrate this day, we affirm that the vision has produced results. The end has indeed justified the means.

“I must commend His Excellency former Governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for his bold vision in establishing this University of Science and Technology and the Kogi State University, Kabba. His initiative gave every senatorial district access to quality higher education, complementing the legacy of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba.

“Equally, I appreciate His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, our current Governor, for sustaining this legacy, ensuring smooth academic operations, and prioritizing education as a tool for empowerment. These efforts have brought university education closer to our people, created jobs, and inspired our homegrown professionals to contribute to state development.

“To the Vice Chancellor, academic and non-academic staff, thank you for your dedication. Your hard work has made this first convocation possible.

“Running a university, especially one focused on science and technology, demands enormous resources and vision. Running three state universities requires even more courage, commitment, and discipline. The progress we see today shows that capable hands are at work. I commend the Governing Council for its wise leadership choices, and the Vice Chancellor for steering the institution with focus and resilience.

“To our distinguished Guest Lecturer, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former Governor of Ekiti State, we thank you for honoring this invitation and enriching this occasion with your insights. Your experience in governance and development is invaluable. I look forward to deeper collaboration between our states in pursuit of national progress.

“To our graduates, today marks the beginning of a new chapter. You are the first fruits of this university. Be proud of that history. Carry the banner of CUSTECH with integrity and excellence wherever you go. Let this degree be a stepping stone to greater academic and professional achievements.

“You earned your place here through merit and perseverance. Many applied, but only a few made it. Never take that privilege for granted. Stay focused, disciplined, and productive. Reject violence and social vices. Represent your families, your communities, and this university with honor. Cooperate with the management and contribute to an environment of peace and learning.

“Let me make a simple appeal. To the management, staff, and students: continue to work in harmony with the government of Kogi State under Governor Ododo. Partnership and cooperation will strengthen education delivery and bring greater benefits to our people.

“On behalf of the 8th Kogi State House of Assembly, I assure you of our unwavering legislative support. We remain committed to providing the framework and resources that will help this university grow stronger.”
