IG Police Promises More Roles For Women Police

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has promised more roles for women police in tactical, operational, and command roles.

This was made known
during the 70 years of women policing in Nigeria held on Thursday in Abuja, where the Inspector General affirmed the Nigeria Police Force was proud of its women.

He assured that the Nigeria police will continue to discourage any form of discrimination, harassment, and career obstruction against the women.

“We follow your strength, we celebrate your intellect, we rely on your courage, we are inspired by your service, and today, the entire nation stands with you,”

“To the younger generation of female police officers, you are not merely inheriting history; you are shaping the next chapter,” he said.

Egbetokun explained that the celebration of women in policing was a legacy born in 1955, that began quietly and had grown into one of the strongest voices in the history of Nigerian security.

Commending the 70-year heritage, defined by resilience, brilliance, discipline, and unwavering service, Egbetokun stressed that even within limitations, they set a new standard and their discipline, compassion, professionalism, and quiet courage became the seeds of institutional transformation.

He emphasised that women are now playing pivotal roles across crucial policing functions such as forensic science, cybercrime and digital investigations, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping operations, and community safety initiatives, reflecting a modern, inclusive, and globally aligned policing institution.

The IGP highlighted several gender-responsive reforms championed under his leadership, including expanded career pathways, enhanced welfare, targeted leadership development, and the strengthening of the Gender Unit.

Egbetokun noted that the journey of the women officers was a reflection on the resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment of Nigerian women to national service.

The ceremony welcomed distinguished dignitaries, including the Special Guest of Honour, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, CON, the Chief of Army Staff represented by Major General I.M. Abdullahi.
