Super Eagles Chase Historic Quarter-Final Spot as Mozambique Dream of Upset

Nigeria will put their flawless Africa Cup of Nations campaign on the line on Monday when they face Mozambique at the Fez Stadium, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Having powered through the group stage with three wins from three matches, the Super Eagles enter the last-16 tie as one of the tournament’s most convincing sides, while Mozambique arrive buoyed by a historic breakthrough into the knockout rounds.

For Nigeria, the encounter represents another step in a long-standing AFCON tradition. Victory would mark their 12th appearance in the quarter-finals, reinforcing their status as one of the continent’s most consistent performers.

The Super Eagles boast an imposing record against Mozambique, remaining unbeaten in five previous meetings, including a commanding 3–0 AFCON win in 2010 and a narrow 3–2 friendly success in 2023.

The West Africans’ confidence is rooted in both form and firepower. Nigeria scored eight goals in the group phase, their best-ever AFCON group tally while key figures such as Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi have driven the team’s balance between attacking threat and midfield control.

Lookman, who impressed with goals and assists, insists the team’s focus is firmly on the bigger prize rather than early plaudits.

Mozambique, however, will see the tie as an opportunity to rewrite history. After securing their first AFCON finals victory against Gabon to reach the knockout stage, the Mambas are embracing their underdog status.

Led by coach Chiquinho Conde and inspired by Geny Catamo’s goals, Mozambique will look to defy the odds and halt Nigeria’s momentum in a contest that pits pedigree against possibility.
