The Federal Government has called on the media to strengthen democratic accountability through balanced and responsible reporting, urging journalists to combine scrutiny with fairness in their coverage of public office holders.

‎Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the remarks in Abuja during a media briefing ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

‎He stressed that while the media must hold leaders accountable, such efforts should promote national unity, informed discourse, and constructive engagement among citizens.
‎
‎According to the minister, responsible journalism goes beyond exposing wrongdoing to include providing context and fostering meaningful public conversations.
‎
‎He noted that public broadcasters like FRCN have a unique role in amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians while serving as platforms for dialogue and accountability across the country.

‎Idris described the corporation’s 75th anniversary as a significant milestone, reflecting its enduring presence throughout Nigeria’s history.

‎He said FRCN has remained a steady voice from the pre-independence era to modern times, documenting key national moments and contributing to the country’s information landscape. He also expressed optimism about ongoing improvements in the information sector, urging stakeholders to prioritise performance over complaints.

‎In separate remarks, veteran statesman Babagana Kingibe commended the evolution of broadcasting in Nigeria, while FRCN Director-General Mohammed Bulama highlighted reforms aimed at modernising the organisation. These include digital initiatives such as online radio services and mobile platforms designed to expand reach, especially among younger audiences, as part of activities lined up to commemorate the broadcaster’s anniversary.
