Kogi Condemns Orphanage Attack, Rescues 15 Pupils as Hunt for Abductors Intensifies

The Kogi State Government has confirmed the rescue of 15 abducted pupils following a violent attack on an orphanage in Lokoja.

The state government vows to secure the rescue of other victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.

The government condemned the attack on the orphanage and school facility located in a remote area of Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja.

According to the statement, preliminary findings revealed that the facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was operating illegally without registration with the state government or the knowledge of relevant authorities and security agencies.

The incident, which occurred late on April 26, 2026, involved the abduction of 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor by unknown gunmen.

Fanwo disclosed that security agencies, led by the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other operatives, swiftly mobilised to the scene following the report.

He said the prompt and coordinated response led to the successful rescue of 15 of the abducted pupils, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of the remaining eight victims and apprehend those responsible.

The government commended the gallantry, professionalism, and rapid response of the police and other security agencies for their decisive action.

While reaffirming its commitment to the rescue of all victims, the state government warned against the operation of orphanages, schools, and similar institutions in isolated and vulnerable locations without proper registration and notification to relevant authorities.

The Government stressed that such practices pose serious security risks, particularly in the current security climate, and urged operators to comply strictly with regulatory and safety protocols.

It advised all proprietors of similar facilities to engage appropriate government agencies to ensure proper oversight, security assessment, and adequate protection.

The government also reassured residents of its commitment to the protection of lives and property, noting that security operatives remain active to bring the situation fully under control.
