Kogi Lawmaker Abejide Dumps ADC Over Prolonged Crisis

A member of the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing prolonged internal crises and leadership uncertainty within the party.

The lawmaker, who represents Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, announced his decision on Friday while addressing journalists in Abuja.

Although he did not formally declare his next platform, he is widely expected to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming weeks.

The lawmaker described his exit as difficult but necessary to protect his political future.

“It is a painful decision, but necessary to save my political future from those who came to destroy my former political party that I laboured hard to nurture and loved dearly,” he said.

Abejide traced the party’s internal crisis to a lawsuit he filed in 2025 against key figures in the ADC leadership, including David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola and Ralph Nwosu.

“Around August 2025, I took the leaders of the ADC coalition, including Senator David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola and Chief Ralph Nwosu, as well as the party, to court,” he said.

According to him, prolonged adjournments and legal delays, alongside the absence of a clearly defined leadership structure, made it difficult to pursue his political ambition within the party.

The lawmaker, who chairs the House Committee on Customs and Excise, said consultations with his supporters and political associates informed his decision to seek an alternative platform.

“Due to long adjournments occasioned by the opposing counsel’s tactics to frustrate the speedy hearing of my suit, my counsel advised that I should consider an alternative party to pursue my ambition,” he said.

He also raised concerns over the absence of duly recognised national officers required to validate nomination processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing his constituents, Abejide alleged that the party had been taken over by external interests.

On his political future, he hinted at alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu and affirmed his support for the progressive.

His defection is expected to reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
