FG Delays Planned Evacuation of Citizens from South Africa Amid Logistics, Funding Concerns

The Federal Government has delayed the planned evacuation of Nigerian citizens from South Africa following renewed tensions affecting foreign nationals and ongoing registration of those willing to return home.

Authorities said the exercise has not yet commenced because necessary arrangements are still being finalised, including coordination with relevant diplomatic missions, verification of applicants, and logistics for safe transportation.

Officials explained that although a large number of Nigerians have indicated interest in voluntary return, the evacuation process requires proper screening to confirm eligibility and ensure an orderly operation.

The delay is also linked to funding and operational considerations, as discussions continue on how the exercise will be executed and whether it will be fully or partially supported by government resources.

Diplomatic engagements are ongoing between Nigerian representatives and South African authorities to ensure the safety of affected citizens while monitoring the situation on the ground.

The evacuation plan was initiated in response to rising anti-immigrant sentiments and protests in parts of South Africa, where foreign nationals have in some cases been accused of contributing to economic pressures and unemployment.

Nigerian authorities have assured citizens that their safety remains a priority and that the government is working toward a structured and secure return process once all requirements are completed.

A final date for the evacuation has not yet been announced, but officials maintain that the process will proceed once preparations are concluded.
