Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, observed on June 12 across the country, urging citizens to remain committed to protecting and strengthening democratic institutions.
In his Democracy Day message, the Governor emphasised the need to safeguard democracy through active civic participation, national unity, and support for good governance.
Governor Ododo described Democracy Day as an important occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of past heroes and the democratic values that continue to shape the nation’s growth and development. He noted that the celebration serves as a reminder of the country’s journey toward democratic governance and national progress.
According to the Governor, democracy remains the most credible system through which citizens freely choose their leaders and hold governments accountable. He stated that despite the challenges facing the nation, democracy continues to provide a framework for peace, development, inclusion, and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
Quoting former American President Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” Governor Ododo stressed that the strength of democracy lies not only in elections but also in the active participation of citizens in national affairs. He urged Nigerians to uphold the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship.
The Governor called on citizens to preserve the gains achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice by pro-democracy advocates, warning against actions capable of weakening democratic institutions. He added that collective commitment to democratic principles remains essential for national stability and progress.
Governor Ododo also underscored the importance of good governance in driving sustainable development and poverty reduction. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing him as one of the nation’s foremost champions of democracy whose resilience helped strengthen democratic governance in the country.
Paying tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the Governor described him as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the nation’s modern democracy.
On behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, Governor Ododo wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and urged them to remain united in building a nation where democracy delivers justice, opportunity, hope, and prosperity for all.
