A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a fresh suit seeking an order compelling the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a new investigation into the controversial death of late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The case, instituted by the Registered Trustees of the Break the Silence Foundation, came up before Justice James Omotosho on Wednesday but could not proceed due to the court’s engagement with ongoing security-related criminal matters requiring continuous hearing.
Justice Omotosho subsequently adjourned the matter until June 25, 2026, for further proceedings.
The foundation is asking the court to direct the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant authorities to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death, arguing that previous inquiries failed to thoroughly examine crucial aspects of the case.
According to court documents, the group contends that several individuals who were among the last people to interact with the late singer before his death have not been adequately investigated. It further maintains that fresh evidence and unresolved questions surrounding the circumstances of Mohbad’s demise warrant a comprehensive police probe.
The suit follows months of public concern and sustained calls for justice after Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that sparked nationwide outrage and intense scrutiny of those around him before his passing.
Earlier proceedings in the matter saw the Federal High Court grant the foundation leave to pursue the action. The case has since witnessed multiple adjournments, with previous hearing dates fixed for May 4 and May 28 before Wednesday’s latest postponement.
Legal representatives of the foundation insist that a fresh investigation is necessary to ensure accountability and public confidence in the handling of the case.
However, the court is yet to determine the merits of the application, and no order directing a new police investigation has been issued.
The adjournment means all parties are expected to return to court on June 25, when arguments on the substantive suit are expected to continue.
Mohbad’s death remains one of Nigeria’s most closely watched celebrity cases, with many Nigerians continuing to demand clarity and justice nearly three years after the singer’s passing.
