Mexico Reach World Cup Knockout Stage with Narrow Win Over South Korea

Co-hosts Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea at Guadalajara Stadium on Thursday.

A second-half goal from Luis Romo proved to be the difference as Mexico recorded their second straight win and confirmed top spot in Group A with one match remaining.

Romo scored shortly after halftime, taking advantage of a goalkeeping mistake to net the only goal of the match.

South Korea pushed for an equaliser late in the game, but Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel made two crucial saves to preserve his side’s lead and secure qualification.

The victory guarantees Mexico a home knockout match in Mexico City, where they will face one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Despite the loss, South Korea remain second in the group with three points and are still in a strong position to qualify. Czechia and South Africa both have one point after drawing 1-1 earlier on Thursday.

Speaking after the match, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre praised his team’s determination.

“It was a very close game. We fought for every ball and never gave up,” Aguirre said. “The match was decided by a mistake, and fortunately it went in our favour. The performance may not be memorable, but the result certainly is.”

Mexico will conclude their group-stage campaign against Czechia, while South Korea face South Africa in a crucial final Group A fixture.
