The Federal Government has approved the replacement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) iconic khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of a comprehensive reform aimed at modernising the 53-year-old national service scheme and promoting indigenous industries.
The announcement followed the approval of a broad reform package by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), with the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, saying the changes are designed to reposition the NYSC into a skills-driven, productivity-focused institution that aligns with the Federal Government’s economic agenda.
According to the minister, the adoption of Adire is intended to encourage the use of locally made products, strengthen Nigeria’s textile industry and create more opportunities for indigenous fabric producers. He explained that replacing the long-standing khaki uniform reflects the government’s commitment to promoting local content while giving the scheme a fresh national identity.
Beyond the uniform change, the reforms introduce several significant measures, including a six-week orientation programme with greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and career development. Corps members will also be deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional competencies to improve productivity during the service year.
The Federal Government also approved a transition to civilian operational leadership for the NYSC, while the military will continue to provide security support during orientation camps and other official activities. In addition, the traditional Passing Out Parade will be replaced with a graduation ceremony, while orientation camps will undergo a grading and certification process to improve infrastructure and service delivery.
To enable the implementation of the reforms, the Federal Executive Council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations to provide the necessary legal backing.
The announcement has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerians. While many welcomed the decision as a boost for the country’s creative and textile industries, others expressed concern over the replacement of the khaki uniform, which has served as one of the most recognisable symbols of the NYSC since the scheme was established in 1973.
The government has yet to unveil the final Adire uniform design or announce the exact date the new attire will be introduced. Officials say further details will be released after the necessary legal amendments and implementation guidelines have been completed.
