Many Nigerians are expressing optimism that the Federal Government’s recent reduction of import tariffs on selected goods will ease the cost of living and lower the prices of essential commodities across the country.

The tariff reductions, introduced under the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures, cover 127 categories of imported goods, including food items, vehicles, industrial machinery and raw materials. The policy is aimed at reducing the cost of imports, supporting local production and easing inflationary pressures.

Among the key changes, import duties on bulk rice, broken rice, crude palm oil and raw cane sugar have been reduced. Tariffs on passenger vehicles have also been lowered, while electric vehicles, mass transit buses and manufacturing equipment now attract zero import duty.

The Federal Government said the measures are expected to reduce transportation and production costs, improve the affordability of essential goods and stimulate economic activities across various sectors.

Despite the positive outlook, economic analysts and industry stakeholders have cautioned that consumers may not experience immediate price reductions. They noted that factors such as exchange rate fluctuations, high shipping costs, port charges, fuel prices and other logistics expenses continue to influence the prices of goods in the market.

Importers and business operators also stressed that while the tariff cuts are a welcome development, broader economic reforms will be needed to ensure that the benefits reach consumers.

Many Nigerians, however, remain hopeful that the policy will gradually translate into lower food prices, more affordable transportation and reduced costs of imported goods, providing much-needed relief amid the country’s current economic challenges.
