Mexico’s legendary goalkeeper, Guillermo Ochoa, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, ending an outstanding 22-year career.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper confirmed the decision on Tuesday through a post on social media, putting an end to speculation that he would continue playing after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I gave it my all. I left everything on the field for my clubs and the national team, and today I hang up my gloves,” Ochoa wrote.
Ochoa represented Mexico at six FIFA World Cups, matching the record held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He was Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups before serving as a backup during the 2026 tournament.
He began his professional career with Club America in 2004 before moving to French side Ajaccio in 2011, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to play in Europe. During his career, he also played for Malaga, Granada, Standard Liege, Salernitana, AVS Futebol, AEL Limassol and returned to Club America between 2019 and 2022.
On the international stage, Ochoa won six CONCACAF Gold Cup titles with Mexico and also claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. At club level, he won the Mexican league title with Club America and the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege.
Following his final World Cup appearance, Ochoa emotionally kissed the goalposts at Azteca Stadium before saying goodbye to teammates and fans.
Reflecting on his journey, he thanked supporters and said he was proud of everything he achieved while representing Mexico.
