Tinubu Receives Trump’s Assurance of Stronger Security Partnership

United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed America’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending the Nigerian leader’s efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen national security.

The letter, dated July 6, 2026, was made public by the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. It was sent in response to an earlier correspondence from President Tinubu, although the contents of Tinubu’s letter were not disclosed.

In his message, Trump thanked Tinubu for his letter and praised what he described as the Nigerian president’s “decisive leadership” in confronting terrorism and other security challenges affecting the country.

“I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote, while assuring Tinubu of Washington’s continued partnership in combating terrorist threats and promoting peace and stability in Nigeria.

The U.S. president also reaffirmed America’s commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation with Nigeria through intelligence sharing, military collaboration, and other strategic initiatives aimed at defeating terrorist groups operating in the region.

The release of the letter comes as both countries continue to deepen security cooperation amid ongoing efforts to address terrorism, banditry, and other forms of violent extremism in Nigeria.
