The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has warned corps members against engaging in political campaigns or using their NYSC identity and social media platforms to promote political parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nafiu gave the warning on Wednesday during his working visit to the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Katsina, Arise TV reported.
He cautioned corps members against spreading misinformation and AI-generated content, urging them to verify information before sharing or reposting it on social media.
He also reminded the corps members that they are required to remain politically neutral and must not use their NYSC identity or social media platforms to campaign for political parties or candidates.
“As corps members, you are not permitted to campaign for any political party or candidate. If your social media activities are traced to political promotion while wearing the NYSC identity, appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
Nafiu noted that corps members will play an important role in the 2027 elections, as many of them would be deployed as ad hoc electoral personnel.
He described the assignment as an opportunity for corps members to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democracy by helping eligible citizens exercise their right to vote.
He urged them to take the responsibility seriously and contribute to the conduct of credible, free and fair elections.
Nafiu also encouraged corps members to take advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, stressing that vocational and entrepreneurial skills are increasingly important in the current economy.
He noted that the orientation programme is designed to instil discipline, leadership, teamwork, obedience and a sense of responsibility among corps members through drills and other activities, including Man O’ War obstacle exercises.
