Security operatives have arrested 14 suspected illegal miners in two separate operations in Kogi State. Eight of the suspects were arrested last week, while an additional six were apprehended.
Disclosing this during the parading of the suspects in Lokoja on Monday, the State Security Adviser, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), stated that the eight suspects initially arrested have already been handed over to the Kogi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and subsequently charged to court.
Commander Omodara commended the officers and men of the 12 Brigade for their dedication and continued contributions to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
He cautioned motor park officials to strictly monitor passengers and cargo in transit, warning that any vehicle found conveying contraband items will be impounded.
Omodara also urged traditional rulers to desist from harbouring illegal miners in their domains, stressing that the state government will not tolerate any compromised traditional ruler.
Describing illegal mining as a major catalyst for insecurity, Omodara reaffirmed the commitment of the government and security agencies to ensuring that illicit mining does not thrive in the state.
On his part, the Kogi State Commandant of the NSCDC, Olumide Aletan, assured that operatives will carry out thorough investigations on the newly arrested suspects before prosecution in accordance with the law.
