UI’s New VC, Prof. Olapegba, Assumes Office

Prof. Peter Olapegba on Monday assumed office as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), outlining a five-year agenda to reposition the institution as a global centre of excellence.

He succeeded Prof. Kayode Adebowale, whose tenure ended after serving as the university’s vice-chancellor.

The inauguration ceremony, which featured a thanksgiving service and an inaugural lecture, was attended by Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who represented Governor Seyi Makinde, and other dignitaries.

In his inaugural address titled From Tradition to Transformation, Olapegba said the university must preserve its heritage while embracing changes needed to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving world.

He said the five-year agenda, covering 2026 to 2031, would form part of a broader 10-year strategic roadmap.

The priorities include full digitalisation and the development of an AI-ready university that promotes the responsible use of artificial intelligence, research focused on addressing Nigeria’s challenges, improved staff welfare and career development, and better student services and campus facilities.

Others are improved campus security, graduate employability, infrastructure renewal and stronger international partnerships.

Olapegba described staff, students and alumni as the university’s greatest assets, pledging to prioritise students’ welfare while maintaining high academic standards.

He also called for alternative sources of funding through research grants, endowments, alumni contributions and partnerships with the private sector.

Ahead of the university’s 80th anniversary in 2028, the vice-chancellor urged members of the university community to work together to strengthen the institution for future generations.

He concluded with a call for collective commitment, saying, “Together, we shall strive. Together, we shall transform. Together, we shall build. Together, we shall succeed.”
