Nigerian gospel singer and pastor, Nathaniel Bassey, has become the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion total views on YouTube, marking a significant milestone for African gospel music.

The achievement was recorded on November 1, 2026, when statistics from his official YouTube channel showed that it had accumulate over one billion total views.

The growth has partly been driven by the Hallelujah challenge, an online prayer and worship programme founded by Bassey in June 2017, which has attracted participants from across the world.

During the October 2026 edition, the programme recorded significant viewership with it’s opening session attracting over four million views, while the grand finale, known as the Hallelujah Festival, recorded more than 4.3million views, according to channel-tracking data.

Bassey has also maintained that the Hallelujah challenge is primarily focused on worship and spiritual devotion rather than revenue generation.

Bassey’s achievement highlights the growing global reach of Nigerian gospel music through digital platforms.
