Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback at Old Trafford, recovering from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic Champions League victory over Roma.
United appeared headed for another disappointing result as Roma scored twice within six first-half minutes through Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty.
The goals sparked anger among home supporters, with green tennis balls thrown onto the pitch in protest against the club’s ownership. Fans also chanted against the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox.
United’s troubles worsened when £70 million midfielder Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring injury, raising concerns about a possible lengthy spell on the sidelines.
However, Michael Carrick’s side refused to surrender and began their fightback when captain Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty to reduce the deficit.
United continued to push forward, and after Bryan Mbeumo struck both posts with an effort, Matheus Cunha capitalised on Leonardo Balerdi’s defensive mistake to restore parity.
Cunha then completed the turnaround four minutes from time, firing home from a tight angle to send Old Trafford into celebration.
The Brazilian was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time, but United held on to secure a memorable victory and end their nine-game winless run.
