The Kogi State Government is ramping up its commitment to expanding water access across Lokoja and nearby communities. Through a combination of infrastructure upgrades and collaborative stakeholder engagement, the government aims to ensure a steady and reliable water supply.

This commitment was reaffirmed by the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya Farouk, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Teachers’ House, Lokoja.

Engr. Farouk highlighted the importance of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s political will in driving ongoing reforms in the water sector.

He noted that the government is not only focused on restoring damaged systems but is also laying the groundwork for long-term expansion to meet the rising demands of a growing population.

The plan includes increasing water supply capacity to eventually serve up to 3 million residents in Lokoja.

The commissioner emphasized that one of the major hurdles facing water distribution is the aging infrastructure, as well as poor maintenance practices by residents.

He pointed out that leaking or broken pipes often go unreported or unfixed, further straining the system.

Residents were urged to take responsibility for the maintenance of water lines connected to their homes.

Engr. Farouk also reported positive outcomes from previous community engagements in UngwanTiv and the Amusement Park, where awareness campaigns and discussions have fostered stronger cooperation.

These initiatives, he said, have already helped resolve water transmission issues in several parts of the city.

He further stressed that while the state is investing in infrastructure and operational capacity, community collaboration remains key. “We can’t do it alone,” he said.

“With every household contributing, even small repairs can make a big difference in ensuring fair and steady distribution.”

Stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the government’s transparency and pledged to mobilize their communities in protecting water infrastructure and promoting responsible usage.
