Ododo Orders Action on Truck Movement in Lokoja

Truck movement within Lokoja is set for tighter regulation as Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has ordered the immediate initiation of legislative procedures to control truck operations during peak hours. The directive aims to enhance public safety and reduce traffic congestion and accidents in the state capital.

The directive was issued during a State Executive Council meeting held on Monday in Lokoja.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the move is part of the government’s proactive response to recurring fatal truck-related accidents in the city.

“You will recall that these trucks have claimed many lives. The most recent tragic incident occurred near the Federal University, Lokoja. Following that, the Governor assured the students and university management of concrete action. Today, the Council approved the process of sending a bill to the Kogi State House of Assembly to regulate truck movements during specific hours,” Fanwo said.

He emphasized that the proposed legislation aims to safeguard lives and ease congestion in Lokoja.

Meanwhile, the Council also reviewed progress on key infrastructure projects at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara. According to Fanwo, the perimeter fencing initiated following a security breach is now 90% complete, with only finishing touches remaining.

Also, newly constructed male and female hostels have been completed and officially handed over to the university. Similar fencing work at Kogi State University, Kabba, is also ongoing.

In another major development, Governor Ododo has directed the drafting of a bill to establish the Kogi State Agency for Climate Change. The proposed agency will coordinate climate action and environmental sustainability initiatives across the state.

The decision follows Kogi’s participation in an international climate change summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun, led the state’s delegation.

“This agency will provide the legal framework for our climate strategies and signal Kogi State’s serious commitment to environmental issues,” Fanwo noted.

He concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to safety, security, and sustainable development in Kogi State.
