Kogi Government to Partner Private Sector in Poverty Alleviation

The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the private sector in tackling poverty and promoting development across the state. This was disclosed in a press release issued by Unubi Emmanuel, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, following the DAM Basketball Championship and Empowerment Program held at Okene Club, Okene Local Government Area.

According to the release, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Joel Salifu, highlighted the devastating impact of poverty, describing it as a major impediment to human dignity and societal progress. The governor called for stronger collaboration between the government and private organizations to address the root causes of poverty and improve the living standards of citizens.

Governor Ododo emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address crime and poverty simultaneously, noting that hunger often drives individuals into unlawful activities. He commended the DAM Foundation for its impactful initiatives, particularly its focus on empowering the underprivileged and fostering communal harmony through sports and skill acquisition programs.

Dr. Abdullahi Mustepha, Chairman of the DAM Foundation and Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, outlined the foundation’s objectives, which include promoting education, enhancing healthcare, empowering youth, and supporting social causes. He emphasized the importance of equipping young people with sustainable tools for economic independence, citing the basketball championship and empowerment program as avenues for community transformation.

The release further noted that Governor Ododo was honored with the “Sports Champion of the Year” award by Dr. Mustepha during the event. This recognition, the statement said, reflects the administration’s commitment to youth engagement and sports development as part of its broader poverty alleviation agenda.

Prominent attendees at the event included Hon. Onojah James, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security for Idah Federal Constituency, Sheikh Sani Momoh Musa, SSA to the Governor on Ethics and Values, and Hon. Mohammed Lawal Musa, Chairman of Ofu Local Government, among others.
