Thailand Suspends Cambodia Peace Deal Over Border Tensions

The Thai government has announced the suspension of its recently signed “peace deal” with neighbouring Cambodia, citing renewed security threats along the disputed border.

This decision comes just two weeks after the agreement was signed in Malaysia under the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

A government spokesman said the move followed a landmine explosion in Thailand’s Sisaket Province, near the Cambodian border, which left several soldiers injured.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking at a press conference on Monday, said he supported the decision taken by the country’s defence chiefs, noting that the “security threat has not actually decreased.”

“The safety of our troops and citizens remains our priority,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to the agreement, which was intended to secure lasting peace following deadly border clashes in July that left more than 40 people dead.

The October accord, which Thailand has hesitated to formally describe as a peace deal, was expected to mark a new chapter in the often-tense relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.
