FG Confirms Defence Minister Badaru’s Resignation on Health Grounds

The Federal Government has confirmed the resignation of the Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down on Monday citing health concerns.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga,stating that the President accepted Badaru’s resignation with immediate effect.

In the resignation letter dated December 1, Badaru informed President Tinubu that his decision was based on declining health.

“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and appreciated Badaru for his services to the nation,” the statement read.

The Presidency further revealed that the President is expected to communicate the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate later this week.

The statement also noted that the resignation coincides with preparations by the President to outline the scope of the recently declared national security emergency.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
