FUL Appoints Prof. Gbenga Ibileye as New Vice-Chancellor

Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has appointed Professor Gbenga Ibileye as its new Vice-Chancellor, marking a significant leadership transition for the institution.

The appointment, which takes effect from February 15, 2026, was approved by the University’s 4th Governing Council.

A statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, confirmed that the decision was taken by the Governing Council under the chairmanship of Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdallah.

According to the statement, the selection process adhered strictly to established guidelines for appointing principal officers in Nigerian federal universities.

Professor Ibileye emerged top among eleven shortlisted professors following a rigorous and highly competitive process that involved multiple stages of screening, interactions, and interviews.

He reportedly scored 91.9 overall, placing first among the candidates assessed during the exercise, which the Council described as transparent and merit-driven.

He is set to succeed Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, whose tenure has been widely praised within and outside the University community. Professor Akinwumi’s administration is credited with strengthening academic culture, expanding programmes, improving infrastructure, enhancing staff and student welfare, and positioning the University for greater national relevance and stability.

Reacting to the outcome, the Governing Council commended all candidates for their professionalism and commitment, while reaffirming its dedication to due process and good governance.
