Kogi Govt. Promotes Modern Poultry Farming to Boost Livestock Sector

The Kogi State Government has
stepped up efforts to boost the livestock sector by promoting modern poultry farming practices through a SASSO chicken training programme in Lokoja.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, gave the assurance during a sensitisation and training workshop on SASSO Chicken Rearing held in Lokoja.

He described the programme as both timely and impactful, noting that it aligns with the government broader efforts to reposition the livestock industry as a viable driver of economic growth.

Bolarin commended the collaboration between Agro Preciso Nigeria Limited, Kogi Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (Kogi L-PRES), and Adva Nigeria Limited for organising the initiative, stressing the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing agricultural.

According to him, the introduction of improved poultry breeds such as SASSO chickens offers significant potential for enhancing food security, boosting farmers’ incomes, and improving rural livelihoods.

He explained that Sasso chickens, unlike many indigenous breeds, offer dual-purpose benefits, providing both meat and eggs while remaining adaptable to local environmental conditions.

The Commissioner noted that the training programme is essential in equipping farmers, extension agents, and other stakeholders with modern poultry management skills, including proper brooding techniques, effective feeding practices, disease control, and overall husbandry.

He assured participants of the government’s continued support through enabling policies, technical guidance and sustained collaboration with development partners to expand livestock production across the state.

Earlier, Managing Director of Agro Preciso, Nurudeen Lawal, said the workshop marks a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s poultry sector through improved genetics and farmer education.

He disclosed that the initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding between Agro Preciso and Hendrix Genetics, producers of the SASSO breed, positioning the company as the official distributor in Nigeria.

Lawal added that Lokoja was chosen as the starting point for a nationwide rollout, reflecting confidence in Kogi State’s agricultural potential.

The training featured sessions led by international poultry expert, Wilfred Kooij, focusing on efficient poultry production systems suited to local conditions.

Participants, including Ibrahim Arumeh, Bilikisu Yinusa and Blessing Ikani, commended the state government for strengthening farmers’ capacity and supporting the development of the livestock value chain.
