Middle-Belt Tigers were crowned champions of the inaugural Nigeria Super League after edging Southern Sharks by six runs in a thrilling final played at the TBS Oval in Lagos on Sunday.

The victory marked the conclusion of the maiden edition of the tournament, which featured 20 matches and showcased the continued growth of cricket in Nigeria.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Tigers posted a competitive total of 104 for five in their allotted 10 overs under the leadership of captain and wicketkeeper Sulaimon Runsewe.

Southern Sharks responded strongly in pursuit of the target. Isesele Odion Evangel led the chase with 26 runs from 21 balls, while captain Isaac Okpe scored a rapid 15 off seven deliveries. Kenneth Boniface and Durotoye Gideon also made useful contributions as the Sharks fought to stay in contention.

Despite the late challenge, the Tigers produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Southern Sharks to 98 for seven, securing a six-run victory and the historic title.

Earlier in the day, Northern Lions claimed third place with a comfortable 32-run win over Central Eagles in the playoff match.

Middle-Belt Tigers’ Solomon Chilemanya finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 172 runs in eight innings, while teammate Ndubudem Elochukwu earned the Best Bowler award after taking 14 wickets.

Northern Lions’ Ridwan Kareem was named Best Fielder with six dismissals, while Southern Sharks’ Ismail Abdullahi received the Outstanding Young Player award.

Southern Sharks star Isaac Danladi was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after recording 168 runs and 13 wickets in seven innings.

The six participating teams also shared a total prize pool of N13.25 million at the end of the competition.
