Argentina began their FIFA World Cup title defence with a strong 3–0 victory over Algeria, powered by a brilliant hat-trick from captain Lionel Messi.
The match, played at Kansas City Stadium, saw Argentina overcome a determined Algerian side to secure all three points in their opening Group J fixture.
Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a trademark curling finish after a pass from Rodrigo De Paul. Both teams had goals disallowed earlier in an entertaining first half, but Argentina remained in control.
The 38-year-old doubled Argentina’s lead in the second half after capitalising on a mistake by Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane. He completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, sealing the win.
The victory marks a strong start for Argentina as they aim to defend their World Cup title, with upcoming group matches against Austria and Jordan.
