The Presidency has defended Nigeria’s informal business sector, insisting that small-scale enterprises remain a vital source of income and employment despite criticism over recent remarks by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, said the First Lady’s comments encouraging Nigerians to embrace businesses such as selling akara and roasted corn were intended to promote entrepreneurship and self-reliance rather than diminish the country’s economic realities.
Dare recounted how his mother sold akara, bananas and oranges to support their family, noting that the proceeds helped pay for his education. He argued that many Nigerian families have improved their lives through similar ventures.
He added that petty trading and other informal businesses continue to provide jobs and sustain millions of households, describing the sector as an important pillar of the national economy.
The Presidency maintained that the First Lady’s message had been taken out of context and reiterated that every honest business deserves respect, regardless of its size.
