US President Donald Trump has revealed that significant progress has been made towards a peace agreement in Ukraine, with “many elements” already agreed upon in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two leaders are set to have an anticipated phone call on Tuesday morning to continue talks on the ongoing conflict and potential ceasefire agreements. While Trump acknowledged that progress has been made, he emphasized that much work remains, urging that the situation must come to an end immediately due to the staggering loss of life, with 2,500 soldiers dying weekly on both sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Putin for prolonging the war, claiming that the peace deal could have been reached much sooner and that every day of conflict results in unnecessary loss of life. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that discussions with Ukrainian officials have focused on the negotiation process but have not yet specified the conditions for a ceasefire.

International pressure on Putin has been mounting, with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy demanding a “full and unconditional ceasefire now,” while French President Emmanuel Macron urged Russia to demonstrate genuine commitment to peace. Macron also praised Zelensky for his courage in agreeing to ceasefire terms. The White House, optimistic about the upcoming Trump-Putin talks, believes peace in Ukraine is “closer than ever.”

The discussions are expected to address key issues, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022, with potential concessions related to land and energy infrastructure.

Beyond the immediate ceasefire, the broader international community is watching the talks closely, hoping for a more comprehensive solution that could lead to long-term stability in the region.
