Governor Ododo Mourns Ex-UNIABUJA VC, Nuhu Yaqub

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, a distinguished academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja.

Governor Ododo described Professor Yaqub’s death as a significant loss to Kogi State and Nigeria at large, praising his contributions as a fearless voice of truth who stood against oppression both in and out of public office. He acknowledged Yaqub’s immense contributions to academia and public discourse, which left an indelible mark on the nation.

The Governor extended his condolences to the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, the people of Kogi State, and the family of the late professor. He prayed for Allah’s comfort for the bereaved family and for the peaceful repose of Yaqub’s soul.

Born on March 3, 1951, in Okene, Kogi State, Professor Yaqub’s illustrious academic career included serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja from 2004 to 2009, and later as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University from 2012 to 2017. He also held the position of Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, between 2017 and 2019.

Professor Yaqub passed away in Abuja on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 73, following a brief illness. His burial, in accordance with Islamic rites, took place shortly after his death.
