Ododo Champions Radio as a Force for Democracy

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has lauded the crucial role of radio in strengthening democratic practices across Nigeria, as the world marks World Radio Day.

In a statement celebrating the day, Governor Ododo acknowledged that radio continues to serve as an influential tool for promoting political participation, transparency, and social cohesion, particularly in rural areas where access to other media platforms may be limited. “Radio remains a powerful force for democratic engagement, empowering marginalized voices and enabling citizens to actively participate in governance,” he said.

In his address, Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to fostering inclusivity in governance. The Governor emphasized the importance of ensuring that all segments of society, including youth, women, people with disabilities, and individuals from diverse ethnic, religious, and political backgrounds, are actively involved in the decision-making processes of the state.

Ododo stressed, “My administration has been intentional about integrating these groups into governance, ensuring that policies and programs reflect the broad interests and concerns of all Kogi State citizens.” Highlighting the significance of this year’s World Radio Day theme, “Radio and Climate Change,” Governor Ododo commended radio for its role in raising awareness about the global climate crisis.

He pointed out that radio serves as a critical platform for educating the public about environmental issues, offering updates on climate-related events, and encouraging sustainable practices. “In vulnerable rural communities, where people are often directly affected by climate change, radio helps to inform and mobilize people towards climate-resilient practices,” Ododo noted.

The Governor also underscored radio’s unique ability to transcend geographical boundaries, connecting people across the state and beyond. He explained, “Unlike other forms of media, radio can reach every corner of society, from urban centers to the most remote villages. This unmatched ability to reach and unite diverse communities makes radio a vital tool for fostering social cohesion.”

Governor Ododo emphasized that radio plays a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups, making it a cornerstone of his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and unity. He also took the opportunity to highlight his administration’s commitment to sustainable development, particularly in the area of agriculture noting that Kogi State’s investment in climate-resilient agricultural practices aligns with the theme of World Radio Day.

“We are committed to promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and radio serves as an invaluable tool for spreading information about these practices, ensuring that farmers are well-informed and prepared to face the challenges posed by climate change,” the Governor explained.

The Governor further reiterated his administration’s continued support for the growth and development of radio in the state. He emphasized that radio’s role in promoting transparency, good governance, health, education, security, and economic development remains critical. “We will continue to harness the power of radio to ensure that all voices in Kogi State are heard and represented,” Ododo concluded, affirming his administration’s ongoing commitment to leveraging radio as a tool for inclusive governance and sustainable growth.
