Kogi Begins Characterization of Minerals – Engr. Gegu

Kogi State Government has commenced the characterization of its mineral resources as part of a deliberate effort to unlock the state’s economic potential and ensure that its natural endowments translate into prosperity for the people.

‎This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, who revealed that the state is working in partnership with the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to carry out the exercise.

‎According to the Commissioner, mineral characterization is a crucial process in the mining industry as it involves identifying the types of minerals present, analyzing their chemical composition, assessing their grade, quality and possible contaminants.

‎ He explained that the process will also provide vital data on the structure, texture, and economic value of the deposits.

‎Engr. Gegu further explained that alongside characterization, the state will embark on reserve estimation to quantify the volume of mineral deposits available. The reserve estimation, he noted, will classify reserves into proven, probable, and possible categories based on confidence levels and economic viability.

‎He stressed that the two processes are interconnected, as accurate characterization is essential for reliable reserve estimation, which in turn will guide investors and government on mining exploration, development and production.

‎Engr. Gegu maintained that the  administration Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is committed to laying a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth through effective and efficient exploration and management of solid mineral resource in the state.
