2026 WCQ: DR Congo Edge Nigeria on Penalties to Reach Intercontinental Playoff

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup were dashed on Sunday after DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles in a tense penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in Rabat.

Frank Onyeka handed Nigeria an ideal start with a third-minute opener, but Meschak Elia equalised for DR Congo in the 32nd minute. Despite close chances during extra time, both teams failed to score again, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout turned disastrous for the Super Eagles, with Calvin Bassey missing the first kick, Semi Ajayi’s effort being saved, and Moses Simon also failing to convert. DR Congo remained composed, converting their spot-kicks to seal the win and book a spot in the intercontinental playoff, bringing Nigeria’s World Cup hopes to a painful end.

It was a frustrating night for Nigeria, marked by missed chances and the absence of key forward Victor Osimhen, who exited early in the second half due to injury. Despite flashes of promise from Arokodare and Onyemaechi, the Super Eagles failed to unlock a determined DR Congo defence.

With the win, DR Congo advance to the intercontinental playoff, keeping their 2026 World Cup dream alive, while Nigeria are left reflecting on a missed opportunity in a tense, high-pressure showdown.
