Benjamin Sesko delivered again off the bench as Manchester United edged Everton with a narrow win, strengthening their grip on fourth place.
Just under two weeks after his dramatic stoppage-time equaliser at West Ham, the Slovenian forward made the difference once more, finishing off a swift counter-attack in the 71st minute with a composed first-time strike—after initiating the move deep in his own half.
Sesko continued his run after linking up with Matheus Cunha, and by the time Bryan Mbeumo received Cunha’s long pass, the striker had already burst past Everton’s backline to calmly slot home his eighth goal of the season.
Interestingly, only two of those goals came under former manager Ruben Amorim. He netted three during Darren Fletcher’s brief interim spell and has now scored three more under Michael Carrick, who has guided the team to five wins in six matches.
The decisive moment stood out in an otherwise lacklustre contest at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where clear chances were few and far between.
Both teams looked rusty after nearly two weeks without action, and neither could break down stubborn defensive setups for long stretches.
Everton came closest in the first half when James Tarkowski cleared Amad’s effort off the line after Jordan Pickford had partially saved it.
At the other end, Senne Lammens produced key saves to deny Harrison Armstrong and later tipped over a powerful long-range strike from Michael Keane that was destined for the top corner.
The defeat leaves Everton without a home win in seven matches across all competitions, with the Toffees currently sitting ninth.
