UK Opens Doors for Student Entrepreneurs as New Visa Rule Favours Nigerians

The United Kingdom has unveiled a major immigration reform that will allow international students, including a large number of Nigerians, to switch directly from a Study visa to the Innovator Founder visa without leaving the country.

The new rule, which comes into effect on November 25, 2025, was introduced as part of wider efforts to support student innovators and strengthen the UK’s entrepreneurial landscape.

Officials explained that the update eliminates the previous requirement that forced students to return home before applying for the business focused visa. With the change, students holding a valid Study visa can begin the transition process from within the UK, allowing them to start developing their business ideas even while their applications are being assessed.

The Innovator Founder visa provides a platform for graduates to create and manage businesses built on new and original ideas that differ from existing products or services. To qualify, applicants must present a viable business concept endorsed by an approved Innovator Founder endorsing body and meet all other necessary criteria.

The reform follows recommendations contained in the UK White Paper 2025 which emphasized the need to allow promising entrepreneurs already studying in the UK to continue their business journey without interruption.

Since the Start up visa has now been discontinued, the Innovator Founder route becomes the main pathway for foreign nationals seeking to build new ventures in the UK.

Authorities also clarified that a student can only commence business activities after applying under the Innovator Founder route, securing an endorsement from a recognized body, and ensuring the application was submitted while their Study visa remained valid.
