FG Rolls Out 240 Electric Tricycles in 12 Universities to Promote Eco-Friendly Mobility

The Federal Government has deployed 240 solar-powered electric tricycles to 12 universities across the country, with each of the six geopolitical zones receiving 40 units – 20 per university.

The initiative was officially launched at the University of Lagos under the Renewed Hope Transport Scheme by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who announced that all designated institutions can begin using the tricycles immediately.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that while the tricycles are primarily intended for student use, the management of each university retains discretion over how they are deployed.

He urged the vice-chancellors of the beneficiary universities to allocate a significant portion of the tricycles to student unions, ensuring improved mobility and commuting support for students across their campuses.

The Minister stated that the Federal Government plans to extend the electric tricycle initiative to all tertiary institutions across the country, with additional units already included in the 2026 TetFund budget.

The first batch of beneficiaries includes Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Bayero University, Kano (North-West); Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, and University of Maiduguri, Borno (North-East).

Others are University of Jos, Plateau, and University of Ilorin, Kwara (North-Central); University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra (South-East); University of Benin, Edo, and University of Port Harcourt, Rivers (South-South); and University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun (South-West).
