The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has provided clarity on reports that one of its C-130 transport aircraft diverted and landed in Burkina Faso, stating that the action was a necessary precaution carried out in line with international aviation and safety protocols.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF explained that the aircraft was on a ferry mission to Portugal when the crew detected a technical issue shortly after departing Lagos on 8 December 2025. The pilots then diverted to the nearest suitable airfield, which was located in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.
Ejodame confirmed that all personnel on board were safe and were being treated warmly by Burkinabe authorities. He added that efforts were underway to address the technical concern and enable the mission to proceed as planned.
“The Nigerian Air Force wishes to clarify reports regarding the diversion of a NAF C-130 aircraft during its ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December 2025. Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols,” the statement read.
It further stressed that the crew had received cordial treatment from authorities in Burkina Faso and that the Air Force remained committed to strict operational standards.
“Plans are ongoing to resume the mission as scheduled. The Nigerian Air Force appreciates the support received during this period and assures the public that NAF remains professionally committed to strict compliance with operational procedures and safety standards, ensuring the protection of its personnel while fulfilling its constitutional mandate,” the statement concluded.
Earlier reports from Burkina Faso’s state news agency indicated that the aircraft, carrying 11 NAF personnel, landed after what was initially described as an airspace violation. The clarification from NAF confirms that the landing was purely precautionary.
