Kogi Govt Renews Priority to Education, Improves Legal Framework

…As New Policies Strengthen Education Sector, Enhance Students’ Welfare

The Kogi State Government has sustained improved allocation to the education sector in its annual budget, reinforcing its commitment to providing quality education and improving learning conditions across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, disclosed this during a working visit by the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Hon. Ismaila Isah, on Monday to review the ministry’s achievements and ongoing reforms.

Hon. Jones emphasized that education remains a key priority of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration, noting that increased funding has enabled significant progress in school infrastructure, teachers’ welfare and student support initiatives.

He explained that the government’s budget allocation is complemented by a strong legal framework, anchored on the Kogi State Education Law of 2020, which provides a solid foundation for planning, transparency and effective implementation of education policies.

“The budget allocation to education is among the highest in the country and allows us to sustain free education programmes, enhance teacher recruitment and welfare, and expand scholarship opportunities for vulnerable students,” he said.

The commissioner also noted that the government has introduced comprehensive reforms, including free examination registration for public school students, which has eased financial burdens on families and encouraged increased school enrollment and retention.

He further highlighted the implementation of innovative programmes such as the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), which supports girls affected by economic hardship and early marriage through second-chance education and conditional cash transfers.

Hon. Jones reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving learning outcomes, expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, and ensuring equitable access to education for all children in Kogi State.

“Education is the foundation for socio-economic development, and we are determined to build a system that guarantees opportunity and success for every child,”.
