IGP Proposes 200% Gratuity for Retired Police Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity for retired police officers as part of efforts to address longstanding pension challenges in the Nigeria Police Force.

The proposal is being considered by a presidential committee comprising representatives of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Budget Office of the Federation and National Pension Commission.

Under the proposed arrangement, eligible officers could receive pension benefits linked to their last salaries, alongside the enhanced gratuity.

The initiative also seeks to address concerns over the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which has faced opposition from serving police officers demanding an exit from the scheme.

The proposed reforms are expected to address outstanding pension liabilities, improve retirement benefits and streamline pension administration. They could also cover officers who retired before the introduction of any new framework, subject to the final terms.

The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the police pension crisis, which has generated complaints from retired officers over inadequate benefits, delayed payments and administrative bottlenecks.

The Federal Government has reportedly cleared outstanding pension arrears and introduced pension increases, with some beneficiaries receiving nearly twice their previous payments.

Disu’s engagements with the Presidency, PenCom and other relevant institutions are expected to support efforts to establish a sustainable framework for funding and administering police pensions.

However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity has not been approved. Its adoption, eligibility requirements and implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, government approval and funding arrangements.
