Manchester United climbed back into the Premier League’s top five after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford, thanks to Patrick Dorgu’s spectacular volley.
Despite missing seven senior players due to injury and international duty, including captain Bruno Fernandes, United managed to hold on to their lead. Mason Mount was also forced off at halftime, further depleting the squad.
Newcastle dominated possession with 66% and created some strong chances, including Lewis Hall’s powerful strike that hit the underside of the bar, but they were unable to find an equalizer as their recent poor away form continued.
The match’s decisive moment came just after halftime. Diogo Dalot’s long throw was cleared to the edge of Newcastle’s box, where Dorgu confidently struck the ball mid-air, sending it past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into the corner.
Man United came close to doubling their lead through Benjamin Sesko, who hit the crossbar, and Dalot, who missed a great chance when racing behind Newcastle’s defense in the second half.
Newcastle ended the game pressing forward around the United box, but the home side held firm to claim their second clean sheet of the season. It was also their first win without Fernandes since March 2022.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s struggles on the road continue, with six defeats in their last nine away fixtures.
