The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, has firmly declared that students who fail to meet at least 75% class attendance will not be permitted to sit for semester examinations.
He made this known on Friday during the university’s 14th matriculation ceremony, where 9,097 new students were formally admitted. According to him, attendance at lectures is compulsory and not a matter of choice.
Addressing the matriculating students, he urged them to stay committed to their purpose in the university to gain knowledge, develop themselves, and prepare for the future, warning them against becoming “No Future Ambition” students.
He further encouraged them to set clear goals and pursue them diligently, citing Aristotle’s view that excellence is built through consistent habits, not isolated actions. He also reminded them that the future belongs to those who prepare for it today.
Professor Akinwumi cautioned students against examination malpractice, stressing that the institution has zero tolerance for such offences and enforces strict penalties. He also warned against drug abuse and substance misuse, describing them as destructive habits that can ruin lives and careers.
He further emphasized the university’s standards on decent dressing, directing students to adhere strictly to the approved dress code at all times, noting that discipline in appearance reflects personal responsibility and supports success.
Professor Akinwumi added that the matriculation holds special significance for him as it represents the final set of students admitted under his tenure as the university’s third Vice-Chancellor. He said he welcomes them with pride and fulfilment, expressing confidence that they will build on the foundations already established and embrace the institution’s belief that there is no limit to their potential.
He concluded by reminding the new students that being admitted into the university comes with responsibility and discipline, and urged them to take their academic work seriously.
